Abstract

|
It is well known that astrocytes are involved in the neural communication, the survival of neuron, neurite outgrowth, and the process of regeneration. In order to elucidate the phagocytosis on cultured type-1 and type-2 astrocytes of neonatal rat
brain,
flow cytometric studies were performed after two types of astrocytes were treated with latex beads for 2 hours. The phagocytic activities of type-1 and type-2 astrocytes were 72.5% and 51.4%, respectively which were higher than those of
peritoneal
macrophages942.4%). The above results indicate that both the cultured type-1 and type-2 astrocytes have remarkable phagocytosis of foreign material and type-1 astrocytes have more phagocytic activity than type-2 astreocytes.
